Since that first Mr Bungle record, a frenetic jamboree of funk, death metal, lounge music and playful Zappa-esque strangeness, the pair have collaborated on countless projects from Patton's solo record Adult Themes for Voice on Zorn's Tzadik label to group improvisations, 'game' scores, and, more recently, Patton has begun singing with Naked City, the very band that inspired him to contact.

Mr. Bungle started in 1985 as a death metal band, moved to thrash, then settled on experimental rock, until the year 2020, where they ventured back to thrash. Original and continual members: Mike Patton (vocals), Trey Spruance (lead guitar), and Trevor Dunn (bass), added the thrash icons Scott Ian (rhythm guitar) from the big four band Anthrax , and Dave Lombardo (drums) from one of the other.

Before Mr. Bungle went off the deep end and made their funk/alternative metal debut, they were already a mentally unstable death metal band in the 80s. Although their first demo is probably some of the band's most traditional-sounding music (there are actual metal riffs here!), even at this point the songs still include bizarre moments of songwriting and unnecessary instrumentation.
